Joe W. Brown Recreation Center, 5601 Read Blvd.
Join NOLABA, Arts Council New Orleans, and our community partners on Saturday, December 4, 2021, for the first Community Design Charrette to share your thoughts, vision, and ideas for public art in New Orleans East. This initiative is a part of a multi-year creative placemaking project to expand public art to New Orleans East.
The first phase of the project will center around the design and completion of five youth-driven murals in Joe Brown Park. Over the last month, select youth from New Orleans East have been working alongside several professional artists on a community research process to gather stories and history about the East, as well as visit several key neighborhood assets.
Community members are invited to participate in the Community Design Charrette alongside youth muralists and professional artists to give input and feedback on proposed mural designs and public art intervention. The Design Charrette will allow a team of local professional artists to develop architectural and design concepts that respond to the community input gathered from New Orleans East stakeholders. The public art we seek to create will spark imagination, involve community members, and raise awareness about the culture and community of the New Orleans East neighborhood.
Your input will be used to co-create five murals at Joe W. Brown Park as a series of mid-size sculptures at key intersections in New Orleans East.
